Research proposal
Research proposals communicate plans for a proposed study across a wide range of audiences, including experts and non-experts. Proposals must be coherent, cohesive and concise, as they are evaluated by supervising academics and peers, as well as industry partners who may not be psychological experts.
This assignment requires you to present a research proposal for a study that uses a correlational design and relevant correlational analyses. Your study should be designed based on the information provided in the scenario. You are not required to do further research on the topic area.
Research proposal components:
Your research proposal presentation must contain the following sections and content.
Title (1 slide)
- Add a title slide using the following information that is formatted in APA 7th style, similar to a written assignment cover page.
[Your name]
School of Arts and Humanities, Edith Cowan University
[Unit code: Unit title]
[Unit facilitator name]
[Due date]
Introduction and research question (1 slide)
- Provide a brief statement of the rationale and aim of the research.
- State the specific research question(s) for the project.
Method (5 slides—one slide for each point below)
- Provide an outline of the research design.
- What are the sample characteristics and sample size, and how will participants be recruited?
- How will each of the variables included in the study be measured (e.g. self-report questionnaire—you do not need to name a specific scale or measure)?
- Procedure—the steps you will follow to conduct the study.
- What are the ethical requirements for conducting the study and how will these be addressed?
Proposed statistical analysis (2 slides)
- Which statistical software program will you use?
- What statistical analysis/analyses will you use to investigate the research question(s)?
- What assumptions will you test before conducting the statistical analysis/analyses?
- What information will the statistical analysis/analyses provide to help you answer the research question(s)?
Potential results and their application (1-2 slides)
- What information will this study be able to contribute?
- What are the limitations of the information that this study can be generate?
- How might the results of the study be applied to assist the organisation?
Reference list (1 slide)
- Include a final reference list of all the sources you have referred to in preparing your research proposal.
- You are not required to include in-text citations on the PowerPoint slides.
Include a final reference list in APA 7th style of all the sources you have referred to in preparing your research proposal.
Setting the scene for the research proposal:
Succeed Clinic provides assessments and interventions for children who are experiencing learning difficulties. Psychologists at the clinic have noticed an increase in the number of children being referred for difficulties with mathematics. Their assessments show that the majority of children have high levels of anxiety about mathematics and low academic self-efficacy, and many also have difficulties with reading. They also observe a number of commonalities in the parents of these children, including that they may have experienced learning difficulties in their own childhood, typically have completed high school as their highest level of education, report high levels of stress and high levels of family conflict related to helping their children with their homework.
The clinic manager has employed you as a research consultant to develop a research proposal. This proposal should investigate the relationships between the variables they have observed in their clients and other relevant factors that might be related to children’s mathematics anxiety. The aim of the research is to understand the factors that predict children’s mathematics anxiety and assist the clinic staff in developing interventions to help children and their families.
Your presentation should be developed and presented for the clinic manager and clinic staff as the audience.
Option 2: What are the factors that predict well-being in older adults living in the community?
Option 1: What are the factors that predict mathematics anxiety among students?
